WHAT WE’RE CALLING FOR

Our current priorities at Syracuse

In the face of increasing administrative overreach and national threats to higher education, SU AAUP is pushing for meaningful protections at SU.

βœ“

Shared governance: We have urged SU leadership to follow established procedures to ensure meaningful faculty involvement β€” not just token consultationβ€”in university restructuring, high level searches, and changes in policy. The recommendations of Senate or other faculty committees should not be ignored without explanation. Shared governance means faculty have a real role in decisions that affect academic life.

βœ“

Faculty curriculum control: We are actively defending faculty authority over the curriculum against administrative interference, including pressures related to DEI programming and course content.

βœ“

Faculty free speech: We are actively opposing the punishment of faculty and students for exercising their rights to free speech on social media, without due process or clear policy basis. Read our full statement in The Daily Orange. https://dailyorange.com/2025/09/letter-to-the-editor-aaup-condemns-assault-on-free-speech-suggests-caution/

βœ“

ICE/DHS on campus: We have organized Know Your Rights sessions to help faculty, staff, and students understand how to respond to immigration enforcement on campus. We continue to monitor this situation and advocate for campus safety and due process.

βœ“

Campus protest and posting policies: Administrative policies on campus protests and postings were rolled out without faculty input. We opposed these policies and demanded transparent, faculty-inclusive policy development going forward.
