At Syracuse

What SU AAUP is doing on the ground at Syracuse University — our active campaigns, positions, and local advocacy work.

CURRENT PRIORITIES

These are the issues SU AAUP is actively working on right now. We update this page as priorities shift — check back regularly or sign up for updates to stay informed.

Faculty Free Speech

We are actively opposing the punishment of faculty and students for exercising their rights to free speech on social media, without due process or clear policy basis. Read our full statement in The Daily Orange.

Provost Search & Shared Governance

We have urged SU leadership to follow established procedures for the Provost search and ensure meaningful faculty involvement — not just token consultation. Shared governance means faculty have a real role in decisions that affect academic life.

Campus Protest & Posting Policies

New administrative policies on campus protests and postings were rolled out without faculty input. We are opposing these policies and demanding transparent, faculty-inclusive policy development going forward.

Faculty Curriculum Control

We are actively defending faculty authority over the curriculum against administrative interference, including recent pressures related to DEI programming and course content.

ICE/DHS on Campus

We have organized Know Your Rights sessions to help faculty, staff, and students understand how to respond to immigration enforcement on campus. We continue to monitor this situation and advocate for campus safety and due process.

THE ALTERNATIVE FRAMEWORK

A stronger framework for academic freedom at SU

SU AAUP has developed an Alternative Framework for academic freedom protection at Syracuse University — a proposed revision to existing SU policy language that would bring it into alignment with national AAUP standards.

The existing SU policy on academic freedom has significant gaps. Our Alternative Framework addresses these gaps directly, proposing concrete language that would give faculty clearer, stronger, and more enforceable protections.

We are actively working to build faculty support for this framework and to bring it before university leadership and the Faculty Senate.

What it addresses

Clearer definitions of protected speech and activity

Due process requirements before any disciplinary action
